Puff The Magic Dragon. Written by Peter Yarrow in 1962, based on a poem by Leonard Lipton in 1959. Leonard was a 19-year-old University student. He based HIS poem on an Ogden Nash poem called Custard the Dragon. Lipton was friends with Yarrow’s housemate and he used Yarrow’s typewriter to get the poem out of his head. He forgot about the poem until years later when someone told him Yarrow was looking for him to give him credit for the song. He still gets royalties from the song. The final three
