Today would have been singer/songwriter and frontperson of the 60’s folk rock group the Mamas & the Papas John Phillips’ 90th birthday. He had early success as part of the Journeymen, a trio which included Scott McKenzie for whom John later wrote our 1967 feature song San Francisco (Be Sure to Wear Flowers in Your Hair). He then co-formed the Mamas & the Papas (a name inspired by the Hells Angels calling their female members “Mamas”) with Michelle Phillips, Cass Elliot, and Denny Doherty in 1965
