The membership of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is today spread more around the world than ever before. However, the highest concentration of voters, by far, remains in and around Southern California — some 6,000 of roughly 10,000 people — much of which is currently being devastated by out-of-control wildfires.

Because of wildfires in Los Angeles, Academy Award nominations will be delayed by two days and announced on Sunday, Jan. 19

The ongoing crisis has displaced tens of thousands of the city’s residents, including numerous celebrities, and prompted other awards shows to postpone.

The massive Los Angeles fires are still going strong for the fourth day in a row, and they’re causing huge disruptions across the entertainment world. This week, the organization behind the Academy Awards announced it’s extending the voting window for the 97th Oscars.

News of the nominations’ delay comes as a “life-threatening and destructive” fire and wind event tears through multiple locations in L.A. County.
