China has quietly issued its first 2025 rare earth mining and smelting quotas without the typical public statement, sources with knowledge of the matter said this week, another sign of Beijing tightening its control over the crucial sector.

Total cargoes of the magnets rose to 3,188 tons last month, according to Chinese data on Sunday, more than double volumes of 1,238 tons in May in the midst of China’s curbs.

China has discreetly issued its first 2025 rare earth mining and smelting quotas, signaling increased control over this vital sector. The quotas, significant for global supply, are typically public but were kept confidential this time.
