The intense rain in parts of south India, particularly Tamil Nadu, is due to the northeast Monsoon that set in on Tuesday and was intensified due to a well marked low pressure area over Bay of Bengal that turned into a depression in the evening that day and was expected to cross coast near Chennai on October 17 morning,

Due to high tidal waves, the sea was turbulent at Uppada in Kakinada. In some places, houses were damaged and trees and electric poles were uprooted.

The India Meteorological Department in its latest weather update has warned of heavy rainfall and thunderstorm in Tamil Nadu for the next few days. The depression over west central Bay of Bengal has moved closer to North Chennai and has weakened into a well-marked low pressure area,
