Syria’s military entered a stronghold for the Druze community in the country’s south on Tuesday, the government said, reigniting fears of attacks against minorities and triggering renewed Israeli strikes on the forces dispatched by Damascus.

At least 200 people have reportedly been killed since fighting between Druze militias and Bedouin tribes erupted in Suweida on Sunday.

Dozens of people have been killed in armed clashes between Sunni Bedouin tribal fighters and Druze militias in southern Syria, according to local media reports. The violence erupted in the predominantly Druze city in the province of Suweida on Sunday, two days after a Druze merchant was reportedly abducted on the highway to Damascus.

Syria’s defense and interior ministries were deploying personnel to the southern Sweida province to attempt to restore order.
