Hate speech is a huge problem, and companies like X, Facebook, and Instagram have pledged to the EU to do more to tackle it. At the moment, the terms and conditions of all social media platforms forbid users from posting content deemed to be hateful.

Instagram announced a new video editing app, called Edits, on the same day that rival video service TikTok briefly went dark in response to a federal ban. X also touted the launch of a dedicated video tab in its mobile app.

Bluesky also noted that developers are working on alternatives for TikTok using the AT Protocol, or Authenticated Transfer Protocol, the decentralized protocol behind the social media service. These include upcoming apps such as Tik.Blue, Skylight.Social and Bluescreen.Blue.

TikTok bid adieu to its US users over the weekend before returning for an encore with no clear ending. But, it's now joined by a few copycats, including X (formerly Twitter). X announced late Sunday night in owner Elon Musk's typical cringy fashion ( see here) that its US users now have a dedicated tab for vertical videos.
