The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences showered little-seen movies rooted in progressive politics with nominations for the 97th Oscars on Thursday.

In the director category, the academy nominated favourites Sean Baker (Anora), Brady Corbet (The Brutalist) and Jacques Audiard (Emilia Perez). Rounding out the category were James Mangold (A Complete Unknown) and French filmmaker Coralie Fargeat (The Substance). Prominent omissions included Edward Berger (Conclave) and Jon M. Chu (Wicked).

The 2025 Oscar nominations will be announced 7:30 a.m. CT in a live show from the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Los Angeles. The reveal is hosted by actor Bowen Yang of "Saturday Night Live" and actress Rachel Sennott. The nominations announcement were originally set for Jan. 17, but were moved because of the California wildfires.

In digging into Van Buren, Pearce was guided less by real-life experience than the script.
