The snatch block goes over the taught winch rope or cable. A D-ring shackle is used to attach a tree saver in a big loop.

To do the same with traditional snatch blocks and steel shackles, you'd need four snatch blocks and five shackles, which is a lot of weight and space in your rig.

There are also rope-retention rings, or ring blocks, whatever you want to call them. When paired with a soft shackle (the little ropey guy below), it becomes a nice little pulley.
