The National Hurricane Center is now tracking a new zone for potential tropical development that may form near the Northwestern Bahamas and Southern Florida by Saturday. Forecasters are also continuing to follow Hurricane Imelda as it now barely hangs onto hurricane strength and continues to move away from Bermuda.

Forecasters are uncertain if Lorenzo will strengthen into a hurricane, with models ranging from a weak storm to a Category 2.

Rip currents, even from distant storms, are the third-highest cause of death related to hurricanes, after inland flooding from excessive rain and storm surges, according to the Weather Service.
