PS5 sales decline

Sony shipped 8 million PS5 consoles over the recent holiday quarter. While that’s down 16 percent year-over-year, it’s still nearly the same amount of PS4 shipments Sony managed during the same period of its lifecycle.
Despite launching over five years ago, the PlayStation 5 managed to outsell the Nintendo Switch 2 in the latter half of 2025 by 1 million units.
The PlayStation 5 is getting pretty old but it’s still selling surprisingly well. In fact, it outsold the Switch 2 last quarter even without the help of Grand Theft Auto 6. Sony told investors during its latest earnings call that it’s stockpiling memory amid a computing component shortage to try to repeat that holiday sales success in 2026.
Currently, PS5 console sales have reached an impressive 92.1 million units. Console sales have decreased by 4%-- thanks in part to a weak holiday season --but there was a 19% increase in operating income, driven by strong first-party game sales and PlayStation Plus subscriptions.
