Thomas Massie, the congressman representing Kentucky’s 4th Congressional District, was ultimately the only GOP representative to vote against Rep. Mike Johnson for speaker of the US House of Representatives.

The reversal leading to Johnson’s victory comes after President-elect Donald Trump endorsed Johnson and said he would make calls on Johnson’s behalf in the days leading up to the vote for a speaker, which must be completed before the House can conduct any further business.

Two holdouts were convinced to change their minds and support Johnson after all the first-ballot votes were initially cast.

Kentucky Republican Rep. Thomas Massie became the lone GOP representative to withhold his vote for Mike Johnson in his bid to be reelected as House Speaker on Friday.

House Speaker Mike Johnson will hold onto his position as head of the chamber after Republicans cast their votes in his favor. President-elect Donald Trump threw his support behind Johnson.

"I'd say there's a 70% chance Mike Johnson is going to be speaker ... because that's just the way the swamp works," Congressman Thomas Massie said.
