TOKYO -- When Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone powered though the final curve of the 400-meter final at world championships, she glanced to her right and saw something that hadn't been there in a while.

Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone of the United States missed the almost 40-year-old 400 metres world record by the fraction of .18 of a second for gold in a world championship final for the ages on Thursday.
