Legislation advances after a budget analysis estimates the cost of the voucher-style program will nearly quadruple in 4 years.

After hours of testimony Tuesday, the Senate Committee on Education advanced Senate Bill 2, a school voucher bill, setting it up for a floor vote.

School choice is a big issue impacting families in Texas and the Senate will vote next week on a voucher plan. FOX 26's Denise Middleton has details on what is being considered.

There's also about $6.5 billion in additional money for property tax relief on top of what was passed two years ago. That may include what the Senate has proposed, which is an increase in the homestead exemption from $100,000 to $140,000 for most homeowners. For seniors, the exemption would rise from $110,000 to $150,000.

Senate Bill 2 starts a new debate on a school voucher program in Texas. A funding proposal would allow up to 100,000 K-12 students who want to enroll to a private school to participate.
