A Norwegian Cruise ship deviated from its planned route to rescue 63 people stranded in the Ionian Sea. The rescue took place southwest of the picturesque Greek island of Zakynthos on October 22. It has not been made clear who the people rescued by the ship were.
The cruise line’s Norwegian Epic vessel responded to a search and rescue operation in coordination with Greek authorities.
The ship’s crew provided “a medical evaluation, food and other items for their comfort,” the cruise line said.
Norwegian Epic went off course to rescue 67 refugees that were found in distress in the Mediterranean Sea, leading to an itinerary change.
The news comes after Norwegian scrapped more than four months of sailings on its Norwegian Prima and Norwegian Breakaway ships over the summer due to "a fleet redeployment." Cruise cancellations are relatively rare but do occur for other reasons such as ship charters or when vessels need to go into dry dock for maintenance or refurbishment.
But Norwegian Cruise Line, the flagship brand of NCL Holdings Co. NCLH, has put new restrictions in place that curb some of that enjoyment.
