The Israeli military confirmed that Yahya Sinwar, the leader of Hamas, was killed on Wednesday. His body was identified by the Israeli authorities, the military said.

The Israeli military said Thursday it was checking whether its forces had killed Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar, the alleged mastermind of the Oct. 7 attack that killed 1,200 Israelis and captured 250 as hostages.

"Initial report - During IDF operations in the Gaza Strip, three terrorists were eliminated. The IDF and ISA are checking the possibility that one of the terrorists was Yahya Sinwar. At this stage, the identity of the terrorists cannot be confirmed," the Israel Defense Forces said in a statement reported by The Jerusalem Post.
