Maj. Stacie Rhoads told 5NEWS it does not appear the suspect had a connection to the victims, Clinton and Cristen Brink.

The former teacher allegedly killed married couple Clinton David Brink and Cristen Amanda Brink in Washington County, Arkansas.

"Clinton and Cristen died heroes protecting their little girls, and they deserve justice," the Brink family said.

Cristen Brink and her husband, Clinton Brink, were killed while hiking with their young daughters. Murder suspect Andrew McGann was injured in the struggle, authorities said.

The parents were attacked while hiking at Devil's Den State Park with their two daughters, aged 7 and 9, on Saturday.

Andrew James McGann has been charged with murder in the killings of Clinton David Brink and Cristen Amanda Brink.
